When It Feels Like Everyone Is Moving Forward But You’re Standing Still

by Kendra Jarrell

It happens to all of us.

You’re scrolling through your feed and see the announcements:

➡️ A friend just bought their dream home.
➡️ A coworker is building on acreage.
➡️ Your neighbor just listed and is already under contract.

And there you are, looking around your own home, wondering if you’re falling behind.

If you’ve ever felt that way—like everyone else is moving forward while you’re standing still—please know this: you’re not alone.

And more importantly: you’re not behind.

The Comparison Trap

Real estate has a funny way of triggering comparison. Homes are visible, tangible signs of change—and when someone else makes a move, it can feel like a marker of progress.

But here’s the truth: housing decisions don’t tell the full story. That family that bought the bigger home? They may be stretched thin financially. The couple building their dream house? They may be living with parents while construction drags on.

Your journey isn’t supposed to look like theirs.

Why Standing Still Can Be Wise

Sometimes, the bravest choice isn’t moving at all.

  • Maybe staying put means keeping your great mortgage rate.

  • Maybe renovating your kitchen buys you another five years in a home you love.

  • Maybe standing still gives you breathing room to wait for the right opportunity instead of rushing into the wrong one.

Stillness can actually be strategy. It’s not a lack of progress—it’s alignment with your season.

A Framework for Peace

If you’re feeling restless or second-guessing yourself, try this simple framework:

  1. Define Your Needs. What’s the real reason you’re even considering a move? Is it space? Location? Lifestyle?

  2. Check Your Timing. Do you need to act now, or is waiting an option?

  3. Count the Cost. What would moving, building, or renovating really mean for your budget and daily life?

  4. Trust Your Gut. Sometimes the answer isn’t in the math—it’s in how you feel when you imagine each scenario.

When you walk through those questions, the answer becomes less about what everyone else is doing and more about what’s right for you.

My Gentle Reminder

It’s easy to measure ourselves by visible milestones—new houses, job titles, kids’ achievements. But here’s the reminder I want you to carry: your pace is your peace.

Real estate isn’t about “keeping up.” It’s about creating a life and a home that feel aligned with who you are and where you’re going.

So if you’re standing still while others are moving forward, maybe you’re not stuck. Maybe you’re steady. Maybe you’re simply preparing for the right next step when the time is right.

And that’s something to be proud of.
